Wave is a free-to-start accounting, invoicing, payments and payroll tool for very small businesses and freelancers in the US and Canada.

Data last updated November 2026 · Our methodology

Overview

Wave is a Toronto-based accounting app owned by H&R Block. It is built for solopreneurs, freelancers and micro businesses in the US and Canada. The free Starter plan includes unlimited invoices, estimates, bills and bookkeeping records, plus income and expense tracking and core financial reports. The Pro plan costs 19 USD (25 CAD) per month or 190 USD a year. It adds automatic bank imports through Plaid, auto-merging and categorization of transactions, receipt capture, automated late payment reminders, branded invoices without Wave branding, and multiple users with admin, editor or viewer roles. Pro is priced per business, not per user. Card payments cost 2.9 percent plus 60 cents per transaction (3.4 percent for Amex), and Pro waives the 60 cent fee on the first 10 transactions each month. Payroll is a paid add-on. In the US it costs a 40 USD base fee plus 6 USD per employee or contractor paid, and it now includes tax filing in all 50 states. In Canada it costs 25 CAD plus 6 CAD per worker, with Quebec excluded. Wave Advisors adds a dedicated bookkeeper for roughly 149 to 199 a month. The main limitation is scale and service. NerdWallet notes that Wave has no inventory, time tracking, audit trail, or customizable reports, and few integrations. Free users can only reach a chatbot, and reviewers frequently complain about slow support and about problems after Wave moved payroll processing to a new provider in 2025.
