Overview
Plex is a cloud-native manufacturing platform that began at Plex Systems in Troy, Michigan. Rockwell Automation bought the company in 2021 for $2.22 billion. The platform combines ERP, a manufacturing execution system (MES), quality management and supply chain planning. Its financial side includes a general ledger, statements consolidated across business units, recurring and reversing journal entries, and accounts payable and receivable. It also handles multi-currency translation using average and spot rates, matches cash accounts against bank statements in real time, sets monthly or annual budgets with variance reporting, and keeps an audit trail. Because finance shares a database with production and inventory, cost and inventory values come straight from plant activity. That is the main reason a mid-sized discrete or process manufacturer would choose it. It is a poor fit for service businesses and small companies. Rockwell publishes no price list. Third-party sources describe a quoted annual subscription. One cites unlimited users and machines, while estimates of per-user prices and total cost vary widely. Implementation services commonly run past $100,000. Integration options include Rockwell automation hardware, machine connectivity and a REST developer portal with AP invoice and payment APIs. The main limitation is that finance is not the product's strength. Reviewers and analysts call its financials functional but not deep, and some note that complex consolidation may need extra work. Reviewers also report rigid workflows, a steep learning curve, occasional outages and uneven support.

Who Plex Smart Manufacturing Platform is best for
Good fit
Built for discrete and process manufacturers, with MES, quality control and traceability next to the financials.
Sources describe the best fit as manufacturers with roughly $11M or more in revenue and 50 or more users.
Less suited
Covers core accounting and consolidation, but reviewers say the financial depth trails finance-first ERPs.
Implementation costs that often exceed $100,000 rule it out for small firms.
