Overview

QuickBooks Desktop is Intuit's Windows-installed accounting product. It covers the general ledger, invoicing, bills, payroll, inventory and reporting from a company file kept on premises or with a hosting provider. Intuit stopped selling new Pro Plus, Premier Plus and Mac Plus subscriptions after September 30, 2024. Existing subscribers can still renew. Support for the 2023 releases ended on May 31, 2026, and with it bank feeds, payroll tax tables and Payments for those versions. Desktop 2024 is the last major release, and Intuit has said it has no sunset deadline. For new buyers the product in practice means QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise. Enterprise supports up to 40 users and up to 1 million customers, vendors and inventory items. It also offers role-based permissions, industry editions and more than 200 customizable reports. Intuit pitches it mainly at manufacturers and wholesalers. Enterprise is sold by subscription only, in four tiers. Silver, Gold and Platinum are billed annually and scale with the number of users. Gold adds Enhanced Payroll. Platinum adds Advanced Inventory and Advanced Pricing. Diamond is billed monthly and adds Assisted Payroll and QuickBooks Time Elite. Since February 2026, Gold and Platinum also charge a per-employee payroll fee on top of the subscription. Integrations include QuickBooks Time and a Salesforce CRM connector in Diamond. The main drawbacks are rising, hard-to-predict costs and a desktop architecture that needs hosting to work remotely. Intuit is steering customers toward QuickBooks Online and Intuit Enterprise Suite instead.

Who QuickBooks Desktop is best for

Good fit

  • Intuit pitches Enterprise at manufacturers, and Platinum adds bin tracking, serial and lot tracking, and FIFO costing.

  • Logistics
    7/10

Wholesale and distribution businesses are a core target, and advanced inventory and pricing tools serve them.

Less suited

  • A Desktop Accountant edition still exists for renewals, and many firms keep Desktop clients.

  • It handles up to 40 users and 1 million list entries, but has no cloud-native access.

  • Entry-level desktop editions are no longer sold to new buyers, and Enterprise costs about $1,873 a year or more.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Handles up to 1 million list entries and up to 40 users, more than most small-business accounting tools.
  • Platinum's advanced inventory adds bin locations, barcode scanning, FIFO costing and serial or lot tracking for distributors and manufacturers.
  • Over 200 customizable reports and more than 115 user permission settings give detailed control.
  • Intuit says Desktop 2024 has no sunset deadline, which gives renewing users some stability.

Cons

  • New Pro Plus and Premier Plus subscriptions are no longer sold, so only the costly Enterprise edition is open to new buyers.
  • Prices keep rising, and per-employee payroll fees on Gold and Platinum make renewal costs hard to predict.
  • As a desktop application, it needs paid hosting for remote access.
  • Some G2 reviewers report crashes and difficulty reaching direct support.
