Cursor
6.9/10Cursor is an AI coding editor and agent platform, now owned by SpaceX. It writes, edits and reviews code for individual developers and engineering teams.
Data last updated November 2026 · Our methodology
Overview
Cursor is an AI-first code editor built on VS Code, so existing extensions, themes and keybindings carry over. It combines code completion, chat, and agents that can run multi-step coding tasks. Those agents run in the editor, on the command line, in the cloud, and on web and mobile. Bugbot adds AI review on GitHub pull requests. Cursor was founded in 2022 by Anysphere, and SpaceX completed its acquisition on August 14, 2026. Since then the product has been bundled with xAI's Grok services. As of November 2026, new customers choose from a shared Cursor and Grok plan ladder: Free, Plus at $8, Premium at $30, Super at $100 and Ultra at $200 per month. Annual billing saves about 17 percent. Team seats start at $30 per user, and Enterprise is priced on request. Each plan's usage allowance resets weekly and covers Grok models only. Third-party models such as Claude and GPT are billed separately at API list price. Older Pro, Pro+ and Teams plans are closed to new buyers. Enterprise adds SCIM, audit logs, controls over repos, models and MCP, and spend limits. Cursor holds ISO 27001 and ISO 42001 certifications and a SOC 2 Type II attestation. It suits startups and engineering organisations that want an agentic IDE rather than a plugin. The main drawback is cost: reviewers keep pointing to unpredictable usage-based billing and frequent pricing changes, and heavy users who prefer non-Grok models pay extra.
Our Rating
Who Cursor is best for
Good fit
Cheap entry plans and fast agentic coding suit small engineering teams.
Individual plans start at $8 a month and work inside a familiar VS Code environment.
Teams seats include SSO, centralized billing and usage analytics.
Enterprise offers SCIM, audit logs, access controls and ISO and SOC 2 assurances, but there is no self-hosting and ownership changed recently.
Less suited
Useful for development agencies, but not for non-technical agency work.
The product is built for software development.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- It is built on VS Code, so developers keep their extensions, themes and keybindings when they switch.
- Agents run in the IDE, CLI, cloud, web and mobile, and Cursor 2.0 added parallel agents.
- It holds ISO 27001 and ISO 42001 certifications plus a SOC 2 Type II attestation, and Privacy Mode is available on every plan.
- Enterprise admins can control repos, models, MCP servers and network access, and audit logs are included.
- At $8 a month, Plus is a low-cost entry point for individual developers.
Cons
- Reviewers often report unpredictable usage-based bills and contentious pricing changes.
- Included usage covers Grok models only, so Claude and GPT usage is billed extra at API rates.
- After the SpaceX acquisition, legacy plans closed, and switching to a new plan cannot be reversed.
- There is no self-hosted option, and some reviewers say cloud processing rules it out for highly sensitive code.
- It can lag behind upstream VS Code updates.
