Autodesk ReCap Pro
6/10Desktop reality capture software from Autodesk that turns laser scans and photos into point clouds and meshes for design and construction teams.
Data last updated November 2026 · Our methodology
Overview
Autodesk ReCap Pro is a Windows desktop application for registering, cleaning, classifying and measuring laser scan point clouds. Its Photo component also builds 3D models from drone or camera photos. Recent releases add scan to mesh conversion and automatic extraction of features such as ADA ramps and driveways. The 2027 release adds an experimental Autodesk Assistant AI preview, a home screen redesigned to match other Autodesk apps, mesh templates with custom metadata, IFC 4.0 export, and view states that sync between the desktop and the cloud. ReCap Pro mainly serves surveyors, architects, engineers and contractors who bring as-built conditions into Revit, AutoCAD, Civil 3D and other Autodesk tools. Projects can be published to Autodesk Docs, Autodesk Construction Cloud and Forma Data Management, where the free ReCap Viewer lets wider teams view and mark up scans. Autodesk sells ReCap Pro as a single-user subscription. Sources put it at about 405 USD a year or about 50 USD a month, and Flex token pay-per-use is also available. Prices vary by region and reseller. The main limitation is performance. Autodesk's own known-issues list says very large point clouds may fail to mesh depending on the machine's resources, and users report slow conversion and heavy hardware demands. ReCap Pro is also a capture and processing tool, not an asset management or maintenance system.
Our Rating
Who Autodesk ReCap Pro is best for
Good fit
It publishes to Autodesk Construction Cloud and supports scan-to-BIM workflows for as-built conditions.
It integrates closely with Revit, AutoCAD and Civil 3D for engineering design from scans.
Less suited
It can process photos into 3D models, but dedicated photogrammetry tools go deeper.
- Small Business5/10
The single-seat subscription is affordable, but the software needs powerful hardware.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Imports scans directly into Revit, AutoCAD and Civil 3D, which suits teams already on Autodesk tools.
- Publishing to Autodesk Docs and Construction Cloud lets team members without a license view scans in the free ReCap Viewer.
- The single-seat subscription costs about 405 USD a year, which is low next to many survey-grade point cloud suites.
- Releases in 2025 to 2027 added automated feature extraction, IFC 4.0 mesh export and an AI assistant preview.
Cons
- Autodesk's own known-issues list says very large point clouds may not mesh, depending on the machine's resources.
- Users report slow conversion of scans into RCP files for Revit.
- It needs powerful hardware to perform well.
- It covers capture and processing only, with no asset or maintenance management.

Yes. ReCap project files feed into Autodesk design tools such as Revit, AutoCAD and Civil 3D.
It depends on your hardware. Autodesk recommends intelligent decimation or a Limit Box when a point cloud is too large to mesh.
Yes. Projects can be published to Autodesk Docs or Forma and opened in the free ReCap Viewer.
It adds an Autodesk Assistant AI preview, a redesigned home screen, mesh templates with custom metadata, IFC 4.0 export and view states that sync between desktop and cloud.
