Trimble RealWorks
5.3/10Windows desktop software from Trimble for registering, analyzing, modeling and inspecting 3D laser scan point clouds, aimed at surveying and scanning professionals.
Data last updated November 2026 · Our methodology
Overview
Trimble RealWorks is office software for 3D scanning work. It takes point clouds from terrestrial laser scanners and other sources and handles registration, cleanup, analysis, modeling and deliverables. Registration can run automatically, with or without targets. Analysis tools include surface creation and editing, volume calculation and orthophotos. It also does automated object classification and 3D inspection, which compares scans to produce deviation reports. Higher editions add shape fitting and extraction, plant object modeling, and automated inspection and calibration for storage tanks. Trimble sells it in four editions: Starter, Core, Performance and Storage Tank. Subscription licensing comes with lower upfront cost and ongoing updates. Trimble does not publish prices, so you buy through Trimble or its dealers. One undated US dealer listing shows the base product at about 5,170 USD and an advanced plant edition at about 26,900 USD. It suits survey firms, engineering and construction teams, and plant or tank inspection contractors, especially those already using Trimble scanners and GNSS gear, since it fits that hardware and survey workflow best. It runs only on Windows desktops. Third-party listings show few integrations and no public API. Comparison sites point to its reliance on the Trimble ecosystem and a learning curve as the main drawbacks. Competitors such as Leica Cyclone REGISTER 360 get more praise for registration, and Autodesk ReCap for handing data to Revit. Public user reviews are scarce.
Our Rating
Who Trimble RealWorks is best for
Good fit
It covers scan registration, modeling and deviation inspection for as-built and plant work.
Volume calculation, surfaces and as-built inspection support construction surveying.
Less suited
The Storage Tank edition and plant modeling tools target oil and gas and process facilities.
It accepts multi-source data, but its strength is terrestrial scan processing rather than drone flight workflows.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Covers the full office workflow from automatic registration, with or without targets, to modeling and deliverables in one application.
- Inspection and comparison tools produce deviation reports from point clouds, which reviewers highlight.
- A dedicated Storage Tank edition automates tank inspection and calibration, which few general point cloud tools offer.
- Fits well with Trimble scanners and GNSS survey workflows.
Cons
- No public pricing. Dealer listings suggest perpetual licenses cost thousands of dollars.
- Windows desktop only, with no web or mobile app.
- Third-party listings show few integrations and no public API.
- Reviewers note dependence on the Trimble ecosystem and a learning curve.
