Overview

IBM watsonx Orchestrate is IBM's platform for building and running AI agents. Business users get a no-code visual builder. Developers get a Python-based Agent Development Kit and CLI, plus a local Developer Edition for testing. The platform acts as a supervisor that routes requests across native agents, external agents (for example from Amazon Bedrock) and tools, using open protocols such as MCP and A2A. It includes a catalog of pre-built domain agents for HR, procurement and sales. According to NAND Research, there are more than 80 pre-built connectors, including Salesforce, ServiceNow, Workday, Oracle and Microsoft. Agents can be deployed to webchat, voice, Slack and Teams. A control plane covers policy enforcement, PII controls, token and LLM cost tracking, and evaluation and observability. It runs on IBM Cloud, AWS or on-premises. Pricing is a capacity-based subscription. A 30-day free trial is available. Essentials starts at 578 USD per month for up to 4,000 monthly active users and 200,000 messages. Standard starts at 6,360 USD per month for 40,000 users and 2 million messages. Premium is quoted by IBM and adds data isolation and a HIPAA-ready option. Optional partner add-ons, such as Tavily research and Bright Data web agents, come with their own usage allowances. The product suits large, heterogeneous enterprises that already use IBM and have strict governance needs. Its main drawbacks are the cost for smaller teams, a learning curve for advanced features, documentation that lacks practical examples, and debugging of multi-step agents that reviewers find hard.
