6.4/10

German hosting provider offering cloud servers, dedicated servers, S3-compatible object storage and shared web hosting at low prices for developers and businesses.

Data last updated November 2026 · Our methodology

Overview

Hetzner Online is a German infrastructure provider founded in 1997. It runs its own data center parks in Nuremberg and Falkenstein in Germany and in Helsinki, Finland, and offers cloud locations in Singapore and in Hillsboro, Oregon and Ashburn, Virginia in the USA. Its range covers shared web hosting, cloud servers with root access, rented dedicated servers including a server auction, load balancers, and S3-compatible object storage. Cloud servers come in Cost-Optimized, Regular Performance and General Purpose lines. Prices are listed in euros excluding VAT and are billed hourly up to a monthly cap. Regular Performance starts at €6.49 per month, and General Purpose with dedicated vCPUs starts at €43.49. Web hosting runs from €1.60 to €16.72 per month. Object storage costs €6.49 per month, which includes 1 TB of storage and 1 TB of egress, and extra usage is metered. Developers can manage resources through a REST API and CLI, with integrations for Terraform, Ansible, Python, Go and Kubernetes, and one-click apps such as Docker CE, Coolify, WordPress and Nextcloud. Hetzner suits developers, startups and IT teams that are comfortable running their own stack and want EU-hosted, low-cost compute. The main limitation is that it is mostly self-managed. Hetzner raised prices by about 30 to 37 percent in April 2026 and cut US bandwidth allowances in late 2024. Reviewers also often report strict identity checks that block new accounts and support that does not offer 24/7 chat.

Who Hetzner is best for

Good fit

  • Hetzner offers an API, a CLI, Terraform support, root access and low-cost compute.

  • Reviewers estimate it costs several times less than the hyperscalers for comparable compute.

  • Dedicated and cloud servers in EU data centers suit teams that manage their own infrastructure.

Less suited

  • Shared web hosting is cheap, but most products need technical skill to run.

  • Managed services are limited, and support has no 24/7 chat.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Compute is still cheaper than DigitalOcean, Linode or Vultr and several times cheaper than the hyperscalers, even after the 2026 price rises.
  • Cloud servers are billed hourly with a monthly cap, and firewalls and private networks are included at no extra cost.
  • Infrastructure can be automated through a REST API, a CLI, and integrations for Terraform, Ansible and Kubernetes.
  • Hetzner owns its data centers in Germany and Finland, which suits teams that need EU data residency.
  • Object storage includes 1 TB of storage and 1 TB of egress for a flat base price.

Cons

  • Prices rose by about 30 to 37 percent in April 2026, the second increase in about 18 months.
  • US cloud bandwidth allowances were cut sharply in December 2024.
  • Reviewers often report strict identity checks that block or close new accounts.
  • There is no 24/7 chat support, and some reviewers say support is slow to respond.
  • Managed services are limited compared with the hyperscalers, so most of the stack is self-managed.
