Overview
Above, trading as Above Surveying Ltd, is based in Colchester, UK. It inspects and maps utility-scale solar plants from the air and runs SolarGain, a cloud platform built only for the solar industry. Its services cover the whole asset lifecycle. Topographic mapping supports project design and yield modelling. Digital construction management tracks build progress against milestones. Thermographic inspections find hotspots, string faults, faulty junction boxes and PID degradation. Drone footage is processed with computer vision to locate defects down to the individual module. SolarGain puts testing, inspection and operational data in one shared environment. Data can come from Above's own flights, the customer's teams or third-party providers. During construction, orthomosaics are layered over design drawings to build a component-level digital twin. Users can also upload factory flash tests and serial numbers, and connect SCADA monitoring after commissioning. The SolarGain Mobile app, earlier called EyeSite, uploads inspection records from the field and turns visual inspections into punch lists. Above reports work on more than 10,000 sites for over 900 companies, with more than 500 data collection partners. It acquired the German drone start-up ucair in 2020. Pricing is quote-based. For construction monitoring it depends on site size and how often the site is scanned, and no public plans exist. The main limitation is how narrow it is: it suits solar asset owners, EPC contractors and O&M providers, and offers nothing for other asset types or general maintenance management.
Our Rating
Who Above Surveying is best for
Good fit
The product is built specifically for utility-scale solar asset owners and operators.
The digital construction management service tracks solar plant build progress and produces as-built records for EPC contractors.
O&M teams use SolarGain to find faulty modules and plan repairs.
Less suited
Utilities with solar portfolios use it; for example, SA Water inspected 33 sites with it.
SolarGain accepts data from third-party providers, and Above works with more than 500 data collection partners.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Built only for solar: thermography finds hotspots, string faults, junction box failures and PID at the module level.
- One platform covers the full lifecycle, from topographic surveys and construction monitoring to O&M inspections.
- SolarGain accepts data from third-party providers as well as Above's own flights, so the platform is not tied to Above's survey service.
- Large track record: Above reports more than 10,000 sites, and its acquisition of ucair expanded its reach in Europe.
- ISO 9001, 14001 and 45001 certified.
Cons
- No public pricing; every engagement needs a quote.
- Only useful for solar assets, not other infrastructure.
- No published integrations list, API documentation or security and trust page.
- Few independent user reviews on G2, Capterra or similar sites.
