Overview

Skydio is a San Mateo company that builds autonomous drones and sells the software that runs them. Its hardware includes the X10 drone with visual and radiometric thermal sensors, the R10 for indoor spaces, the F10 Lightrunner fixed-wing drone, and the Dock for X10 for remote flights launched from a dock. The software side includes Asset Command, Ops Center, 3D Scan, DFR Command, Security Command and ISR Command. For inspection work, Asset Command builds missions around asset records. Teams import inventories from GIS or CMMS systems, set the shots required for each asset type, and schedule recurring inspection cycles. Every capture is tagged to its asset, so each inspection can be compared with the last one. 3D Scan flies adaptive paths around complex structures and produces 3D models and 2D maps. These export to DroneDeploy, Pix4D, Esri, Trimble and Bentley. Skydio Extend and open APIs send the data on to systems of record. Utilities such as Dominion Energy, BGE and ComEd use it, and so do agencies such as NYPD and Caltrans. The company says its products are NDAA-compliant and designed, assembled and supported in the USA, which matters to government buyers. Skydio publishes no prices; customers buy through sales, contracts or resellers. One retailer lists the Dock for X10 at about $57,744, plus annual dock plans and maintenance subscriptions. The main limitation is that Skydio sells a hardware-centred platform rather than a maintenance system. Work orders, spare parts and maintenance planning stay in a separate CMMS, and the total cost is high for small operators.

Who Skydio is best for

Good fit

  • NDAA compliance, US manufacturing and public safety and defense products make it a fit for agencies.

  • Asset-based inspections, substation use cases and customers such as Dominion Energy and ComEd show a strong utility focus.

  • The vendor markets to energy and oil and gas, and its thermal sensing and electromagnetic interference resistance suit energized sites.

  • Dock-based remote operations and integrations with systems of record are aimed at large programs.

Less suited

  • 3D Scan exports to photogrammetry tools suit site mapping, but the high cost limits smaller firms.

  • Prices are quote-only and a dock costs tens of thousands of dollars, which rules out most small operators.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Asset Command ties every capture to an asset record and its inspection cycle, so results can be compared over time.
  • 3D Scan exports to DroneDeploy, Pix4D, Esri, Trimble and Bentley, so outputs fit into existing mapping tools.
  • Dock for X10 and the browser-based Ops Center let teams run inspections remotely from anywhere.
  • NDAA compliance and US design and assembly suit government and critical infrastructure buyers.
  • Skydio says operators become proficient within minutes, though they still need a Part 107 license.

Cons

  • No public pricing; a retailer lists the Dock for X10 at about $57,744 before plans and maintenance.
  • It is not a CMMS, so work orders, spare parts and maintenance planning need another system.
  • Independent user reviews are scarce, and most available material is vendor marketing.
  • The platform depends on Skydio hardware rather than supporting other drone brands.
