Overview

RealityScan is the new name for RealityCapture, the photogrammetry application developed by Capturing Reality, which Epic Games acquired in 2021. Epic renamed it with the RealityScan 2.0 desktop release in June 2025. The software aligns large sets of photos and laser scans, then produces triangle meshes, textures, orthophotos and georeferenced outputs. Version 2.0 added aerial LiDAR support, so airborne point clouds can be combined with aerial and terrestrial imagery. It also added AI background masking, improved alignment on surfaces with few features, and heatmaps that show where coverage is weak. It suits drone survey teams, engineering and construction firms that need reality models of sites and structures, and game and VFX studios that build scanned assets. Version 1.5 added COLMAP export for radiance field workflows. Licensing is simple. Students, educators, and individuals or companies with less than 1 million USD in annual gross revenue get every feature free. Larger organisations pay 1,250 USD per seat per year, which includes one year of updates. A 30-day trial is available, and custom terms apply above 25 seats. The old perpetual license and the pay-per-input credit model have been discontinued. RealityScan is a processing engine, not an asset management platform. It does not handle work orders, inspection workflows or maintenance planning. It runs only on Windows and needs a capable GPU. Older versions required an Nvidia CUDA card, and AMD Radeon support is now available on Windows.

Who RealityScan (formerly RealityCapture) is best for

Good fit

  • Free for educators and schools with no revenue limit.

  • Businesses under 1 million USD in revenue get every feature free.

  • It processes aerial imagery and aerial LiDAR into orthophotos and georeferenced models.

  • Reality models of sites and structures feed engineering and survey work.

Less suited

  • Useful for site documentation, but it has no construction workflow tools.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Every feature is free for companies under 1 million USD in revenue and for schools, so small drone firms can process commercial jobs at no cost.
  • Version 2.0 can combine aerial LiDAR with aerial and terrestrial imagery in one project.
  • Reviewers note fast processing of very large mixed image and laser scan datasets.
  • AI masking and quality heatmaps reduce manual cleanup and show coverage gaps before meshing.
  • COLMAP export feeds radiance field and Gaussian splatting tools.

Cons

  • Runs on Windows only.
  • Needs a strong GPU. Older versions required Nvidia CUDA, and AMD support is limited to Windows.
  • It is a processing tool only, with no asset management, inspection workflow or maintenance features.
  • Perpetual licenses are gone, and larger firms must pay a yearly subscription.
  • A 2024 study found Metashape more reliable at the orthophoto texture step.
