Overview
Overstory is an Amsterdam-founded company that sells an AI risk intelligence platform to electric utilities. It began as a vegetation intelligence tool. Machine learning models read satellite imagery and give tree-level insight into where vegetation is likely to grow into or fall onto transmission and distribution lines, so utilities can rank spans by risk instead of trimming on fixed cycles. The platform has since added wildfire modules, which map where ignitions could start and spread, and storm modules, which show which parts of the network are most exposed to incoming weather. Tradeoff analysis lets planners compare interventions, budgets, and timelines against expected risk reduction, and work direction turns those priorities into programme plans and field action. Overstory says it connects data from sensors, cameras, weather stations, and work orders. It has announced partnerships with IQGeo for geospatial software and with Fulcrum for field work. Its customers are large utilities. The site shows PG&E, Exelon, OG&E, BC Hydro, COPEL, and Hydro Ottawa, and Red Eléctrica appears in a published case study. The company says it serves 6 of the 10 largest utilities in North America. Pricing is not published, and deals are arranged through demos and sales conversations. The main limitations are that the product is narrowly built for utility networks and that there are almost no independent user reviews, so the outcome figures available come from vendor case studies.

Who Overstory is best for
Good fit
Built for electric utility vegetation, wildfire, and storm risk, with customers including PG&E, Exelon, and Hydro Ottawa.
Serves power transmission and distribution operators such as Red Eléctrica and COPEL.
Sold to some of the largest utilities in the Americas, through sales-led deals.
Less suited
Only useful to organisations that operate power line networks.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Uses satellite imagery to assess vegetation across a whole service territory, which cuts down on ground and aerial patrols. OG&E reported 94% fewer pre-storm inspections.
- Vendor case studies report measurable results, including a 48% drop in vegetation-related outages at Hydro Ottawa and a 13x ROI at Sho-Me Power.
- Tree-level analysis can pick out a few high-risk hazard trees from very large populations. Inland Power prioritised 335 out of 76,000.
- Covers vegetation, wildfire ignition, and storm exposure in one platform, with tradeoff analysis for planning budgets.
Cons
- No public pricing. Buyers have to go through demos and sales.
- Very little independent user review evidence. Most outcome figures come from the vendor.
- Narrowly built for electric utility networks, so it does not offer general asset maintenance or work order management.
- Security and compliance details are not described on the main site.
