Overview

GeoMedia is a desktop GIS that began at Intergraph, moved to Hexagon Geospatial, and is now sold as Octave GeoMedia. Octave is the software spin-off Hexagon announced in 2025. GeoMedia's main strength is reading data where it already lives. It works with CAD files, GIS formats, spatial databases and imagery without converting them first. On top of that data it offers 2D and 3D visualization, dynamic queries, network modeling and OGC-standard interoperability. Analysis results are stored as live queries rather than as new datasets, so they update when the source data changes. The Spatial Model Editor lets users chain tools into repeatable workflows. Higher tiers add terrain and raster tools, LiDAR point cloud integration, hydrology, topology validation, linear referencing, COGO cadastral tools and database schema management. Licensing comes in four levels: a free Viewer, Essentials, Advantage and Professional. No prices are published, and every paid license goes through Octave sales or a partner. Publishing to the web runs through the separate WebGIS products: GeoMedia WebMap, GeoMedia Portal and GeoMedia Data Infrastructure. GeoMedia also pairs with ERDAS Imagine for remote sensing. Typical buyers are government agencies, utilities, transportation bodies and engineering consultancies that need precise data management and cartography. The main drawbacks are a smaller user community and less third-party learning material than Esri ArcGIS or QGIS. Independent reviewers have also reported confusing license tiers and uneven interoperability with some non-native formats, such as large Esri file geodatabases.

Who Octave GeoMedia is best for

Good fit

  • Long used by public agencies for cadastral work, data infrastructure and cartography, and Octave lists Government and Public Sector among its sales segments.

  • Network modeling, linear referencing and Power and Utilities sales targeting suit infrastructure network data.

  • It integrates CAD and GIS data directly, and engineering consultants report good results building GIS applications on it.

  • It connects to enterprise spatial databases and has web publishing and data infrastructure modules for large organizations.

Less suited

  • Opaque pricing sold through sales, plus a small community, make it a poor fit for small teams.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Connects directly to CAD, GIS, database and imagery sources without converting them first.
  • Analysis results are kept as live queries that update when source data changes, which avoids piles of intermediate datasets.
  • Reviewers praise its cartography and automatic label placement, which produces little overlap by default.
  • SoftwareReviews users rate vendor support at 90 and data interoperability at 88, both above the category average.
  • A free Viewer lets non-GIS staff open and print GeoMedia maps without buying a license.

Cons

  • No public pricing, and reviewers describe the license tiers as confusing.
  • Much smaller user community and fewer learning resources than Esri ArcGIS or QGIS.
  • One reviewer could not load a large Esri file geodatabase and found database connections slow.
  • Web publishing needs the separate WebGIS products.
  • Ownership has moved from Intergraph to Hexagon to Octave, which raises questions about the product's long-term direction.
