Overview

Lumen Technologies, formerly CenturyLink, is a large US network carrier. Its main hosting product is Lumen Edge Bare Metal, which rents single-tenant physical servers in its distributed edge nodes. Lumen says it has more than 60 edge market nodes, designed to reach most US business demand within about 5 ms of latency, and that servers can be provisioned in about an hour. Customers can pick a supported operating system or bring their own ISO. Networking options include public IPs, IPv4/IPv6 dual stack, and private networks. Security is handled through user-defined firewall policies, encryption, and access controls. Lumen publishes estimated prices for four configurations, from $0.50 per hour (about $360 a month) for 10 cores, 96 GB of RAM, and 480 GB of SSD, up to $3.25 per hour (about $2,340 a month) for 32 cores, 512 GB of RAM, and 24 TB of SSD. You can pay as you go or monthly, and orders are invoiced. The estimates leave out OS licensing, setup fees, connectivity and bandwidth, and taxes. Servers are billed hourly even while powered off, and the published prices apply only to qualifying customers in eligible US data centers. The service suits enterprises that already buy Lumen networking and want compute close to users or devices. It also has an API and developer center. Its biggest drawback is the lack of a self-service ecosystem: there are no managed databases, Kubernetes, or object storage alongside the servers, and almost no public user reviews. Lumen has also been selling off businesses such as its CDN, EMEA, and consumer fiber units, which may concern buyers planning for the long term.

  • IT teams get single-tenant servers with OS choice, BYOISO, private networking, and firewall controls.

Less suited

  • Entry prices of about $360 a month and the qualification process make it a poor fit for small, early-stage teams.
