Overview
Hetzner Cloud is the virtual server platform of Hetzner Online, a German hosting company founded in 1997. Customers launch Linux cloud servers in three families. Cost-Optimized uses shared Intel, AMD or Ampere Arm vCPUs. Regular Performance (CPX) uses shared AMD vCPUs. General Purpose uses dedicated vCPUs. Servers can run in Falkenstein, Nuremberg, Helsinki, Ashburn, Hillsboro and Singapore. Around them sit private networks, free stateful firewalls, floating IPs, snapshots, backups, load balancers and S3-compatible object storage. Everything can be managed through an API and CLI, with Terraform, Ansible, Go and Python integrations, and one-click apps such as Docker, WordPress, Nextcloud and GitLab are available. Billing is hourly and capped at a monthly price. There are no annual contracts. EU servers include 20 TB of traffic, and extra traffic costs €1 per TB. US and Singapore servers include much less traffic. The service suits developers, startups and IT teams who are comfortable running their own stack and want strong price per spec. It is a poor fit for teams that want managed databases, serverless or a managed Kubernetes product. The main caveat in 2026 is that prices and availability have become less predictable. Hetzner raised prices in April and again on 15 June 2026, with CPX and CCX lines rising by up to about 176% for new orders. Cost-Optimized types are listed as unavailable, and provisioning has been limited for new customers. Many users also report abrupt account verification failures and suspensions.
Our Rating
Who Hetzner Cloud is best for
Good fit
Root-access servers with an API, CLI and Terraform support are built for developers who manage their own stack.
Low hourly pricing and no contracts suit early-stage teams, though the 2026 price rises reduce the advantage.
Private networks, firewalls, load balancers and automation tooling cover typical infrastructure needs.
EU data centers and generous EU traffic help SaaS hosting, but there are no managed databases.
Less suited
Prices are low, but self-managed servers need in-house technical skill.
