Overview
DigitalOcean is a cloud infrastructure provider headquartered in Broomfield, Colorado. Its core product is the Droplet, a KVM virtual machine with root access. Around it sit managed services: Kubernetes (DOKS), managed databases, Spaces object storage with a built-in CDN, load balancers, the App Platform PaaS, serverless Functions, and GPU Droplets for AI workloads. Through its 2022 Cloudways acquisition it also sells managed hosting for less technical users. It suits developers, startups and small SaaS teams who want predictable bills and a simpler console than AWS, Azure or Google Cloud. Pricing is pay-as-you-go. Basic Droplets start at $4 per month for 512 MiB of RAM and 10 GiB of SSD, with outbound transfer included. Billing is per second from 2026 and capped at the flat monthly price. Kubernetes and load balancers start at $12 per month, managed databases at $15, Spaces at $5, and App Platform and Functions have free starting tiers. Extra egress costs $0.01 per GiB. Backups are charged as a percentage of the Droplet price or per GiB. Developers can manage everything through the API, the doctl CLI and a Terraform provider, and more than 200 Marketplace 1-Click apps are available. The main limitation is support. Free support is ticket-only with a target response under 24 hours, faster response requires paid plans of up to $999 per month, and reviewers often complain about slow tickets. New Droplets also block outbound SMTP ports, and raw compute costs more than budget hosts such as Hetzner.

Who DigitalOcean is best for
Good fit
Reviewers credit its API, CLI, Terraform provider and documentation as built around developer workflows.
The $4 entry tier, free credit and the ability to move up to managed services suit early-stage teams.
Managed Kubernetes, databases and App Platform cover a typical SaaS stack.
Predictable flat monthly pricing helps, but self-managed Droplets require technical skill.
Less suited
Its service catalog is narrower than the hyperscalers', and fast support requires costly paid plans.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Flat, published hourly and monthly rates with no promotional first-term pricing or renewal price jumps.
- A $4 per month entry Droplet and per-second billing make it cheap to test and run small workloads.
- One account covers a full set of managed services, including Kubernetes, databases, Spaces with CDN, load balancers, App Platform and Functions.
- Developers can automate everything through the API, the doctl CLI and a Terraform provider, and the tutorials are widely used.
Cons
- Free support is ticket-only with a target response under 24 hours, chat starts at $99 per month, and no plan includes phone support.
- Outbound SMTP ports 25, 465 and 587 are blocked on new Droplets, so you cannot self-host email.
- Raw compute costs noticeably more than budget providers such as Hetzner.
- No refunds, and Droplets on suspended accounts are deleted after a grace period.
